What is Friends of Lulu?
Friends of Lulu is a national organization whose main purpose is to promote and encourage female readership and participation in the comic book industry.
Among the goals of the organization are:
- to increase female readership of comics
- to promote the work of women in comics
- to offer networking opportunities and general support to women in comics, and
- to facilitate communication among women and men who share the organization's purpose.
What does Friends of Lulu do?
FoL provides input to publishers, retailers, and the public on the kinds of comics that
appeal to a female readership and on how to reach that readership. A hoped-for
outgrowth of that expanded female reader base will be an increase in the number of
females at all levels of the industry—in retailing, distribution, and publishing, as well as
creating.
Other activities include publishing a recommended reading list, setting up local
chapters, presenting members' work at conventions, offering seminars on select
topics, compiling a mailing list of women in comics, and serving as a public relations
clearinghouse to upgrade the public perception of comics in general.
Who can join?
Membership is open to women and men of all
ages who support the organization's goals. You can join if you are a
professional (a person who works or has worked in or on behalf of the
comic book industry) or simply someone who reads and enjoys
comics. If you are under 18 you are considered a "Jr. Lulu."
Is there a local chapter near me?
Friends of Lulu has an active chapter in New York. Formerly active chapters are now
dormant in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Chicago but members in
these areas have expressed interest in renewing activities.
What do I get if I join?
Your annual dues in FoL (currently $30 for adults, $20 for students, and $10 for Jr. Lulus) get you a nifty
membership card, a subscription to the lively and controversial FoL newsletter,
display space for your work at the tables we host at various conventions around the
U.S., discounts on comics-related events and merchandise, access to comics
promotional programs sponsored by FoL, and involvement in a community of pros
and comics enthusiasts who want to widen the market for comics. Because FoL is a
nonprofit charitable organization, you can deduct your dues as a donation, or if you're
a professional, you can deduct your dues as a business expense. You also get the
satisfaction of playing a role in helping the comics industry reach new readers.
